Tl;dr — Osmo Inspire is a new AI tool to let you create custom fragrances with a story. Turn text and images into fragrances, and have samples automatically sent to you to iterate.

At Osmo, our mission is to digitize scent to increase human health and happiness. There are two parts to this — detecting scent (we’ll discuss with you another day) and designing scent. I’d love to talk to you about what we’ve built to design scent. Today, we’re excited to announce Osmo Inspire, a new GenAI tool that lets you create fragrances with your words and images. Think of it like a ChatGPT for perfume.

We’ve been talking with customers, both large and small, as part of our Fragrance 2o initiative. This is our experiment in how we can use our Scent Platform and AI technology to improve how fragrance is designed and delivered.

In talking with customers, we’ve heard a few things consistently:

• People often describe the scent they want using a story, and that story can arrive in text, in poems, in images, in music, or more. The fragrance design process is multi-modal.
• People want new, original, beautiful fragrances. Fragrance design should be unique.
• It has traditionally been a slow iterative process to design a fragrance, and difficult to visualize or specify the end goal. Fragrance design should be intuitive.

We took this feedback, and we built the simplest possible interface — a text box, and you can put anything in it. Today, you can enter text and images, and soon you’ll be able to add songs, PDFs, PowerPoints, and videos. This is what it looks like:

Today, you enter text, and we’ll create an image (and if you enter an image, we’ll create text). We generate the fragrance from your story, and place it on our Principal Odor Map.

We’re doing more than just naming olfactive notes — we’re creating a full fragrance formula.

‍

And if you want to smell it, all you have to do is click “Request Sample”, and if you are a good match for our beta program, we can compound it and ship it you right away. It’s that simple.

Think of the sample formula as a head start for the perfumer or creator. Once you receive the sample, let’s say you want to make a modification — for example, more peach, less vanilla. Or, let’s say you want to launch this in California at Sephora, and need to do a regulatory check. We’ve built this functionality, and will be rolling out these features to our beta users over the coming weeks. You should expect:

• Ability to modify notes (increase sweetness, decrease fruitiness, etc) and request a new sample.
• Check the formula price (in $/kg)
• Check regulatory compliance (e.g. IFRA, Target, Sephora, State- and International-level regulatory requirements)
• One-click reformulation to avoid specific ingredients (e.g. from a supply chain disruption), or comply with updated or changing regulatory guidelines.
